Thoothukudi's VO Chidambaranar Port is set for a massive transformation following the CCEA's approval of the Rs 17,167-crore Outer Harbour Project.
Designed to future-proof India's shipping capabilities, the project pairs a Rs 11,733-crore Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) investment—dedicated to breakwaters, rock bunds, dredging, and land reclamation—with a Rs 5,434-crore DBFOT framework for two new container terminals.
By deepening the port draft from 16 to 18 meters, the port will soon be equipped to handle ultra-large container ships ranging from 18,000 to 24,000 TEUs, paving the way for accelerated regional development and a stronger global trade network.
